The water and wastewater systems at a rehabilitation center in the Kyiv region were inspected

The foundation’s team traveled to the Kyiv region to conduct a technical assessment of a rehabilitation center. We are preparing a project to restore and modernize the center’s water and sanitation infrastructure. In international humanitarian practice, this area is referred to as WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene).

For a rehabilitation center, these are essential elements. Safe operating conditions depend on the water supply, sewer, and drainage systems.

We started with the documents. Together with representatives of the center, we reviewed the technical documentation, archival materials, and plans and diagrams of the utility networks. We then walked the grounds and inspected the existing water supply and wastewater systems.

During the site visit, we:

• analyzed the condition of the water supply and sewer systems, surface water drainage, and subsurface drainage;
• assessed whether the drainage ditches, collectors, stormwater inlets, and drainage wells required repair or reconstruction;
• discussed possible solutions for diverting surface and groundwater and protecting foundations and buildings;
• identified the areas that need to be restored first;
• compiled a preliminary list of repair and engineering works for further technical design.

They focused specifically on the reconstruction of surface water drainage, the installation of drainage systems, the restoration of drainage networks, the waterproofing of foundations, the vertical planning of the territory, and comprehensive water management in the city center.

The next stage involves engineering and hydrological studies. We will then develop technical specifications, identify optimal WASH solutions, determine the scope of work, and estimate the preliminary cost. The results of the survey will form the basis of a comprehensive WASH project. Its goal is to create a more modern and sustainable water infrastructure and ensure safe operating conditions for the center.
