Humanitarian demining:
safety for everyone

As a result of full-scale war, our country has become the world's largest minefield. As of 2024, the area of potentially mined territories reaches 139,000 km2. Humanitarian demining in Ukraine may take decades. That is why the charitable foundation “INTERNATIONAL UNITY MOVEMENT” has brought together mobile operators and demining organizations to create a safe environment for Ukrainians.

Humanitarian demining in Ukraine: the idea behind the project

“Do not approach explosive objects!” How many times have we heard this warning from emergency responders, police officers, military personnel, and even Patron the dog? Of course, a culture of safety is essential for our health and lives. However, unfortunately, the risk of encountering mines and shells in the most heavily mined country in the world is very high, especially in de-occupied cities and villages.

What if a regular smartphone could warn people about approaching explosive objects? This was the idea behind the initiative launched by the charitable foundation “INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT OF UNITY,” which immediately received strong support from the country's largest telecommunications operator. The new project, “Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine: Safety for Everyone,” aims to create a mobile application to alert the population about potentially dangerous areas with explosive objects.

Humanitarian demining, whether in Mykolaiv or Kharkiv, is critically important for restoring normal life to local communities. Today, the de-occupied territories of these and other regions are high-risk areas due to the huge number of mines and explosive devices left behind by the occupiers. The introduction of innovative technologies, such as our mobile application, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents among civilians returning to their homes.

Humanitarian mine action by a charitable foundation and Ukraine's three largest telecommunications companies

23% of Ukraine's territory is contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance, posing a huge hidden threat. In which cities are key humanitarian demining efforts concentrated? Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, and Mykolaiv regions, but the most heavily mined regions remain Kharkiv, Kherson, and Donetsk regions.

To protect millions of Ukrainians and create an effective system for warning people about approaching high-risk areas, we have combined the efforts of our powerful IT team, mine action and mobile communications operators, and manufacturers of equipment and protective gear for deminers.

With the financial support of our partners, the charitable foundation “INTERNATIONAL UNITY MOVEMENT” purchases and transfers the necessary equipment to official mine action operators and military-civilian administrations. In addition, our charitable organization has launched a training and certification center for the State Emergency Service for deminers and is assembling teams of trained specialists who provide information about dangerous areas during humanitarian demining operations. To this end, the fund's IT team has developed a unique mobile application that collects, processes, and integrates data from deminers with the Kyivstar, Vodafone, and lifecell notification systems.

How does the humanitarian demining project in Ukraine work?

01

We provide and train specialists in humanitarian demining

The International Unity Movement Charitable Foundation provides mine action specialists with the necessary technology, equipment, and protective gear. Together with our partners, we have focused our efforts on training specialists in accordance with the standards of the State Emergency Service and assembling mobile humanitarian demining teams. In this way, our foundation provides all the necessary conditions for the effective detection and disposal of explosive devices and the collection of data on surveyed areas in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, and other deoccupied regions.

Humanitarian demining activities are mainly carried out by the national mine action operator UDS. However, any company, specialized institution, or organization involved in humanitarian demining can join the UDS staff.

The main task of sappers and pyrotechnicians is to provide information about the location of explosive objects during the survey and humanitarian demining of territories via a mobile application.

02

We collect and visualize data from deminers in a mobile app format.

The fund's IT team has a proven track record in creating security applications, including the Kropiva software for the Ukrainian Armed Forces' ground forces. Now, this experience is being put to work for public safety and effective humanitarian demining in Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and other deoccupied regions. The mobile application with an interactive map of mine contamination was created for civilians and mine action specialists. While clearing Ukrainian territories of traces of Russian terror, deminers enter data on potentially dangerous objects and areas. The reporting of specialists is simplified by the high-precision function of the mobile application “Tracking the Path.” The program records the trajectory of deminers in real time, step by step, and ensures a high degree of accuracy in the surveyed areas.

The mobile application aims to become a single centralized repository of data on potentially mined areas in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, and other deoccupied cities. Thanks to the mapping of routes and demining sites, hidden threats become visible, and thanks to integration with the Kyivstar, Vodafone, and lifecell notification systems, users are also informed about them.

More than 139,000 km2 of Ukrainian territory is contaminated with mines, which is larger than the area of Greece. This poses a direct threat to the lives of more than 1.1 million Ukrainians. We hope that Russian terror will end soon. However, as long as the war continues, Ukraine's “minefield” will unfortunately continue to grow. Therefore, the platform for reporting mine hazards and managing humanitarian demining will remain relevant for decades after our victory. Despite this, our people should not have to risk their lives, which is why the project “Humanitarian Demining: Safety for Everyone” needs your ongoing support.

03

We export program data to Kyivstar, Vodafone, and Lifecell notification systems.

The mobile application's processed geographic data base can be easily integrated with mobile operators' notification systems via a software interface. Thanks to modern technologies from Kyivstar, Vodafone, and Lifecell, the application instantly notifies users of approaching danger and the need to enable geolocation tracking to avoid mine threats.

Innovative mobile communication technologies can provide not only accurate geolocation of potentially dangerous objects, but also instant data correction. All new points and areas in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, and other heavily contaminated cities added by deminers are easily synchronized with real-time notification systems.

When Ukrainians are told that it will take decades to clear the country of mines, they gather their strength, unite, and seek solutions. Together with Kyivstar, Vodafone, and Lifecell, our foundation has implemented this solution in the first mobile application that alerts the population about mine hazards and contributes to the effective clearance of Ukrainian lands from the traces of Russian terror.
